EVENTS

The Portuguese Podengo Club of Great Britain held an Educational Day & Match on November 26th 2006. We had a new venue at Daventry, as some of the Members had asked if the events could be held centrally. It was a lovely day and was enjoyed by all, including several new Members and enthusiasts.
We were very honoured to have top all-rounder Terry Thorn judging our Match. It was a shame that we could not have had more of our Podengos there for him to see, but several had been shown abroad and had won either their Championship or points towards a Champion Title and as such, were not allowed to be shown at the Match. However, there were some lovely specimens there and all the dogs went home with plenty of goodies.
The day started off by Heather Ridley giving a very informative talk about the pitfalls of Whelping and how to cope with problems with your newborn puppies.
She covered everything that you will ever need to know about and did so in easy laymans terms. I know that many members enjoyed this immensely, even though they had had many years experience for breeding, they told me that they had learnt so much from this talk.
We then had the Puppy Walk which included 10 youngsters. The class was won by Ham, owned by Ginger Bowles. His brother Bounce was 2nd and Meira was third whose owner is Sue Dunning. 4th & 5th were Ant & Fly both owned by Betty Judge.
We then had lunch, followed by the Match itself. Here are all the results:

Unfortunately, the weather was awful (it had been raining non stop all week) and this put a lot of people off coming, but we had a very enjoyable day, although we had to be inside for the duration of the show.

On 27th November the Club held the first ever Podengo Match in the UK. It was a wonderful day with many enthusiasts coming to see 65 dogs, the biggest gathering of Podengos outside Portugal. 59 of these were wire haired, 5 smooth haired & there was 1 smooth Medio.
We were honoured to have Dr Vitor Veiga - President of the Portuguese Podengo Club of Portugal - give a very informative talk about the Podengo, giving an insight into the Standard and the
Hunting techniques. Dr Veiga was also the Judge for the day.
The first event of the day was a talk given by Nick Thompson, a vet from Bath who gave a very interesting talk on Homeopathy treatment for dogs. He used a series of photographs from case histories and it was fascinating to see the difference from before to after.
If you missed the talk, you can go to www.holisticvet.co.uk or for a referral - 08700 111 340.
Then came the Puppy Walk (4 - 6 months) and there were 14 in this class, two of which were smooth haired. Best Dog & Best Baby Puppy went to Sophie Bailey with Lead the Way (Pepper) and Best Bitch was Linda Cooks Leading Lady (Lottie). They were littermates from Javardo de Viamonte de Plushcourt x Mana de Lapa do Lobo de Plushcourt. Bred by Philip Judge.
All the pups then came back into the ring and were put into litter groups, where ages and breeding were given. This was very informative as to breed type and growth patterns.
We then had a Parade of the Portuguese Champions that were bred in the UK - Plushcourt Amigo, Plushcourt Maquete & Plushcourt Borboleta.
The next event was the Fancy Dress which was judged by Gabriela Veiga. There were 4 entries and was won by Billy, owned by Penny Wills. Billy was Peter Pan for the day.

PAST EVENTS
The Club's second Event in 2004 was an Educational Seminar held on the 28th November 2004 at Holyport, near Maidenhead.
We were extremely lucky to have Jose Romao and Miguel Rebelo come all the way from Portugal to talk about the Podengo, which included the history of the breed, the progress of the breed in recent years and finally describe the finer points of the small Podengo, by giving us a verbal critique on a variety of Podengos present.
Steve Dean (A vets View) came and spoke about health issues including Worming and Vaccinations, Steve is a highly sought after speaker and we were very lucky to get him to come to our Seminar, his talk was very informative, and greatly appreciated.
Our third Speaker was Olga Gibbs from Royal Canin, who spoke about feeding the dog assisted by a slide show, I am sure everyone present learnt a great deal about feeding their dogs.
The day went very well, with nearly 90 Podengo enthusiasts and owners present, coming from wide and far. There were 16 Podengos on show being of various ages, and everyone at the end of the day was able to get their "Hands On" a Podengo.
All the Podengos present displayed their super temperaments, behaving beautifully throughout the day.
The day went very well with a lovely atmosphere. We had a huge Raffle, Silent Auction and we also auctioned a Christmas Cake, the proceeds of which have been put into Club funds.

The Club held their first ever event on Sunday 27th June 2004 - a Companion Dog Show.
The Judge was our President - Mrs Peggy Grayson
It was well attended and the prizes for the raffle and tombola stretched the length of the hall!!
We had a sunny start, but eventually the rain came down and towards the end of the end, we had to move indoors.
The Breed Stand was making it's debut and the sales went extremely well, being the first time that anyone could buy PP merchandise in the UK!
The Club sent a substantial cheque to the Kennel Club Charitable Trust from proceeds on the day.
